Illinois Research - Digitized colletions

I am getting ready to visit family in Illinois and decided to get my to do list completed.  There are several books I need to check out located in various libraries in the area.  I decided to check the several online catalogs of nearby universities to see which of the books I needed where located where.  Imagine my surprise when I found quite a few of the books I needed online and digitized.  Here are a few of the digital books I located through the University of Illinois:
Fayette County in the World War, by Hanes, Rederick M., published in 1922,
Historical encyclopedia of Illinois, by Bateman, Newton published 1901-1902

by Allen, Frank M. Published 1914
by Smith, John W. Published 1876

I think I will spend part of the day checking the other universities online catalog to see what else I can cross of the list.

An overview ill be presented for each state’s archive and some will be covered in greater detail. Archives are not created equally! For the states we are covering this is very evident. Some have a combination state historical society and/or library and the state archives. The websites, research services, online databases, range of holdings, and even the mission statements show big differences. We will also look at other unique archives in the Midwest. The main aim is to show the wealth of material available, how to access it, and why the on-site experience can be so rewarding.

  • Date: Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 8:00 pm Central
  • DescriptionBrick wall research blocks are inevitable. We strive to start with ourselves and work backwards, but sometimes there are impediments that stop us in our tracks. It is then that we must use our most creative research skills, and it is essential that we move to other family members. That means researching our ancestors' siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, and the collateral lines with which they are connected.  Sidestep genealogy means researching these alternative individuals, their records, the places that they lived, and other resources. This lecture will make you stop and think about what alternative research paths you might use, and point you to new resources you may never have considered.

The know and unknown Clark and Damery photo....

g
Row 1:  Glenda Clark, Liz Clark, Nina Damery, Ruby Poundstone Clark (Grandma), Wilma Clark and Maxine Damery.
Row 2:  Ann Clark Ray, Irene Clark Baker, Marsha Clark Chappell
Row 3:  Dennis Michael Ray, Charles Dean Clark, Leo Otis Clark, Max Damery, Bill Damery, John Clark,  David Kent Clark, Otis Elmer Clark (Grandpa)

UPDATE:  Irene Clark Baker provided the following information: Ann Ray Clark, she is deceased. Then I think the next one may be me Irene Clark Baker, and the next one is Marsha Clark Chappell, she is also deceased. Back row is Dennis Michael Ray he was Ann’s husband and he passed this last week. The second guy is Charles Dean Clark, Deceased. these are all brother or sister of mine and Dennis Michael Ray was my brother in law the third guy I believe is Otie Aunt Ruby and Uncle Otis's son.  Thank you Irene!

This is a new found favorite photo of mine.  One of my cousins provided this photo to the funeral home when my Aunt Maxine passed away.  I had never seen this group shot before.  It looks like it may have been taken on my grandparents picnic table in their backyard, that is just a guess on my behalf.  The clothing makes me think perhaps late 50's or early 60's.  I would love to identify the folks that I do not know.  Are they relatives?  What are their connections?  Aunt Maxine looks so pretty with her white blouse and long flowered skirt, was she dressed this way for an event or did she just wear this type of fashion?  Filling in names to the missing folk in this photo may lead to more clues to our family history....does anyone want to hazard a guess to who some of these folks are?

How I got bit by the genealogy bug....

It was an innocent request that has taken up quite a bit of my free time and money.  When I became pregnant for the first time I was so excited, the doctor not so much.  He decided to send me to a  geneticist.  Why?  Marfan Syndrome ran in my family, as did diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.  The assignment from the geneticist - family pedigree, family medical history and any death certificates  I could locate for members of my family that had passed.

The request for the information had me speaking to relatives, requesting death certificates, ans searching for answers.  Even after the geneticist had all the information he needed - I still needed more.  The search has lead me to many interesting characters.  A great great grandmother that married a already married man, a great great uncle  struck down my lightening, a great grandmother that refused to marry after becoming pregnant, a grandfather's whose age changed often,  many that served in the military, and pioneers to the Midwest to name a few.  What began as a request for information about thirty years ago has lead to hunt that has yet to end.  The search has also lead me to Salt Lake, many towns in Illinois and Indiana, numerous courthouses, county historical societies and libraries.

I also believe that initial request may have helped me decide to get my Private Investigators license.  I became a champion record chaser, people finder, courthouse junkie, and questioner - all the things I needed to become a good private investigator.
